The other night I decided to paint the coffee table we got from a friend to surprise Josh when he gets back from his dad's house in Idaho. I threw some food in the oven and got ready to paint!
I lifted the piece of wood that sits in the doorway of the sliding door to keep burglars out and set it up against the door. I opened the door, then I pulled the table outside and shut the door. I remembered something so I tugged on the door to go back inside and it wouldn't open. I tried again and still nothing. I looked down and oh guess what, the door bumped the piece of wood as it opened and the wood slowly fell back down as I shut the door closed. Yep. Locked myself out. Wanna know the best part? I've done this 4 times now. Another best part? No phone. And remember, food in the oven.
I noticed the piece of wood was slightly slanted so I thought i'll keep tugging and tugging and some how move the piece of wood up. I said several prayers and used all my strength to break into my own apartment and guess what? Nothing. I was wearing a swim suit and flip flops from swimming earlier with Danielle and starting planning on how to sleep in the bushes that night. I starting thinking of all my options, walk to my in laws a mile and a half down the highway in my flip flops? But i'd still be locked out, just with company! Call the apartment? Oh don't have my cell phone? Ask this man walking up to borrow his phone because "i'm a woman locked out, home alone for the week, and at this point crying my eyes out?" No that could end bad. That could end very bad. I remembered we had a sweet lady across the hall who always tells us hello as she sees us. I'll go ask for her help! I walk up to her door and think "I don't want to bother her!" So I go back to tugging. Well tugging wasn't really working so I decide to go talk to the sweet lady. I knock on the door and nothing. I knock again and hear "just a minute" I thought YAY! She gets to the door and i start to say "Hey I live across the hall from you.." and she yelled "Oh Kayla come on in!!" I tell her i'm locked out and completely helpless and she was all I could trust. She told me the office number and let me tell her how silly I was for doing this and after a while we got to talking about all her cute decorations. She kept telling me "go look at my new bed spread!" "Go look at my new washer and dryer!" "Oh go look in my linen closet" and as silly as it sounds. That's what I needed to calm my nerves!
After about 20 minutes and no call back, the lady Carol said "call the fire department! Hand me the phone! I'm calling the fire department!!" I thought oh great! She was on the phone for a little bit and luckily it got disconnected cause a few minutes later we hear a man yelling for me and he quickly unlocked my door and I ran and checked on my burning meatballs in the oven!
I went back and thanked my new friend Carol and told her how sweet she was and she apologized for talking my head off. After I left I thought about the whole situation and how everything happened.
As I was saying a few prayers I knew some how get back in I knew there HAD to be a way this would work out. But now i'm thinking I got locked out so I could visit Carol. She is an older woman, in a wheel chair and very lonely. She said she never has visitors over. I brought her some banana bread the next day to thank her and she was very grateful and told me it was the highlight of her day to let me wait with her.
So needless to say I went the very next day and made a few copies of the apartment key so this can finally stop happening and I realized I should probably go visit with Carol more often. I learned my lesson and another valuable lesson too!
